College Essay Coaching – How does it work?

With years of experience as a teacher and a mom of three, I’m comfortable coaching both confident and reluctant writers. My goal is to lead your son or daughter to reflect on his or her significant experiences and share that meaning in an excellent and original personal essay.  The best essays are not scripted or formulaic;  they reveal the heart and soul of the writer. I do a combination of in person and online essay coaching, which I’ve found works best for student schedules.

My students work diligently and head to college with a new toolbox of writing skills!

Here’s how I work:

Individual Coaching Package:  $850

This fee includes coaching for the Common Application essay (up to 650 words) or the Coalition essay (up to 500 words) and all the supplemental essays for up to six college applications. (Supplemental essays are usually 150 to 500 words. Wake Forest University and the University of California system both count as two supplements, due to the length of their essays.)  Additional applications will be billed at my hourly rate.

Pre-meeting:  The writer will fill out a two-page questionnaire and return it to me by email 48 hours before we meet.

In Person Meeting:  I’ll coach the writer one-on-one for two hours at the Arlington Central Library.  (Or if this is a long-distance coaching session, we’ll agree on a time to Skype.) During this meeting, I will explain what colleges seek in personal essays and teach your student how to write a compelling essay by using strong essay examples from my former students and my own essay flow model. We’ll also brainstorm for his or her essays.

Online Meetings (ongoing):  The writer sends me brainstorms, hooks, and drafts of several essays based on our first meeting.  I’ll respond using Track Changes or comment on Google docs with revision, editing, and grammar tips until all of the essays are completed.

I’m also available for FaceTime meetings, phone calls, texting, pep talks, and another in person meeting, if needed.
